No Struggle

I would love to live
in a boarding house
in a small room
with just a bed
a typewriter
and a bottle

But the boarding houses
around here
don't allow bottles
and they're not cheap
$125 a week
that's 500 a month
Last year
there were apartments
for that price

It's all pointless anyway
I'm living
in my girlfriend's mother's basement
paying just my share
of the utilities
the internet
and the property tax

It's a good house
but not ideal for writing
Everything indicates
that I'm poor
but it's more of a pathetic poor
than a tough poor
There is NO sign of struggle
no indication
that I'm fighting
for anything

And it's not just the house
I work
at a grocery store deli
they don't mind
my long hair
or my goatee
They don't expect me in
at a ridiculous hour.
The job is fine
the small red tiles
are my stage
I smile
performer at the pre-dinner theatre
my immortal line?
"Is a little over okay?"
the crowd finishes it for me

It's true it doesn't pay well
but all I have to do
is show up sober
They almost fired
a drunk last week
and this guy looked
like a grocery store deli guy
Haircut from his sister
mustache with no beard
sunken face
relatively dead
but comparatively content

If there is a starving artist alive today
it's probably because
they've a vegetarian
at a lobsterfest

i really liked this post...actually more of what you are saying than what is being said....i mean, the idea is good, but i think the wording can be better....a little bit more elliptical, as it were...but i liked it-it shows a great view....

Thank you. My style usually leans closer to spoken word which is why it might look less like verse and more like a strangely broken paragraph.
